Hudson National Golf Club: Location, Membership Cost, Famous Members and Lawsuit Details

Hudson National Golf Club used to be where the Kitchawan Indians lived when Henry Hudson first sailed down the river. Today, this amazing site is home to a golf course designed by Tom Fazio. The course is nearly 7,000 yards long and was opened for play in 1996.

The site is located 500 feet above the Hudson River, offering beautiful views of the river from all but four holes. Fazio worked very hard to create Hudson National. Before the holes could be drilled through the second highest point in Westchester County, 130,000 cubic yards of rock were blasted out.

In the 1930s, there was a 9-hole golf course called Hessian Hills Golf Club. Some of the land where the golf course used to be is now occupied by Fazio, who designed the 4th hole to run alongside the remains of the clubhouse. This was done to remind people of the historical significance of the area during the time of The Depression.

Tom Fazio supervised a renovation of the golf course design in 2023. The renovation was done by a company called LaBar Golf Renovations. The fairways were planted with a type of grass called bentgrass. The rough areas were changed to a different type of grass called fescue bluegrass. Additionally, all the greens were reconstructed using a type of bentgrass called 007XL bent. Bunkers on holes 3, 6, 7, 9, 12, 14, and 18 were also repaired using Bunker Solution liner.

Donald Trump is a member of the club and he also owns it. He has a handicap index of 3.7, which is true! Other people who are often seen in the Trump locker room are former Yankees manager Joe Torre (although we diehard fans don’t like to acknowledge his other recent job), as well as actors Jack Nicholson and Clint Eastwood. However, they are usually seen on golf courses on the opposite coast.

James Patterson, who is the most successful writer in the world, lives in Sleepy Hollow during the warmer months. You will also find Bill Murray, who played Carl Spackler in Caddyshack, there.

New York’s Mayor Mike, also known as Bloomberg, sometimes goes to the Golf Club of Purchase when he’s not playing golf with President Barack Obama on Martha’s Vineyard.

Hudson National Golf Club Lawsuit

David Anderson vs. Hudson National Golf Club: In 2023, David Anderson, who used to be in charge of the caddies at the club, took legal action against Hudson National Golf Club, Operations Director Theron C. Harvey, and Golf Director Del Ponchock.

Discrimination Allegations: The lawsuit claims that the person was treated unfairly at work because of their disabilities (Tourette’s Syndrome and OCD) and that the work environment was unfriendly and unpleasant. Anderson says that the leaders of the club used his diagnosis against him after he expressed concerns about serving members who were drunk.

The lawsuit is still in progress. The case was filed in the Southern District Court of New York in 2023. You can find more information about the case on Justia Dockets.

Hudson National Golf Club Renovation

  • Green: The entire 18 holes are being reconstructed according to the standards set by the USGA. Most of the items will stay where they are, but a few will be relocated. Additionally, some of them are being redesigned to have a similar shape as the rest. In addition, some of the greens will be made smaller or changed in shape to create new and more difficult hole positions. Other areas around the greens will also be modified, including the addition of areas with shorter grass.
  • Fairways: The process of re-grassing all fairways is currently taking place. The fairways with bent grass and the rough with fescue/bluegrass will be replanted with new and better types of grass.
  • Bunkers: Each bunker on the golf course will receive Bunker Solution liners to enhance the performance of the sand. Over 78 bunkers that already exist will be reconstructed, and several bunkers on the fairway will be moved farther away from the starting point, which will make skilled players consider whether to play it safe or attempt to hit the ball over them. They are adding new bunkers to 9 holes and making some existing ones bigger, which will make it harder for long hitters to find a good spot to land their shots.
  • Grassing: All 18 greens are going to be changed with a type of grass called 007XL. This grass was made by Dr. Rich Hurley at Rutgers University and is better than the current grass. The fairways made of bent grass and the rough made of fescue/bluegrass will be replanted with new and better types of each grass.
  • Irrigation: They are currently replacing the entire irrigation system. LeBar Golf Renovation is currently working on a total renovation of the property. They have a crew of 45 people helping with the project.
