Whittier Narrows Golf Course Reviews

Let me recount my Friday round at Rosemead’s Whittier Narrows Golf Course. Even though it wasn’t the most exciting round, I want to review every course I play to aid others. Whittier Narrows works. Everything exceeded my expectations. My hopes are poor. Solid municipal option.

I took a half-day off work for the course. Amazing $23 cart-included ezlinks.com deal at 12:45. Get 10% off reservation bonus. Three nines near Whittier Narrows. I played the Mountain nine after the River/Pine combo because it was peaceful, nearby, and cheap—$8.25 for a cart-driven “replay” nine.

This LA County course loop took under 4.5 hours. I sped around the Mountain course on my extra nine. Nice to play Whittier Narrows’ “full” course. I enjoyed it more than expected but won’t return.

A little track isn’t. A simpler, wider track. Two enormous doglegs from tee to green. Hard, flat fairways. Flat lies are unusual. Sometimes it’s harder than expected.

Whittier Narrows’ primary problem is size, especially in summer when thick, sticky kikuyu grass impede driving and approach roll-out. The ball may miss a green and not reach the putting surface. From blue tees, River/Pine plays 6,824 yards. It plays long despite “grip it and rip it” on every tee. No holes are far enough for white or gold forward tees. The grouped tee boxes are 5-15 yards apart since whites are 6,638 yards and golds 6,424. They were close, so doing this on every hole felt needless.

Three par-3s and two short par-5s (459 and 405) at 2,713 yards are on the shorter Mountain nine. The par-3s and par-4s on this nine are standard length. My favorite course was the Mountain, with small fairways and tough greens. That was my favorite of the three nines.

All was OK at home. Summer Kikuyu blossoms. Greens, fairways, and rough are lush. The dark County course is lovely. Excellent greens. They looked and rolled well. Sand is scarce in bunkers.

Most find Whittier Narrows convenient and economical. Many find this site too open, yet challenges keep it interesting. Though subtle, they exist. Today was excellent despite seasonal weather.

Final Words

Whittier Narrows Golf Course is located in Rosemead, California, just 20 minutes from downtown Los Angeles. The course has 27 holes, including three 9-hole courses designed by William F. Bell. The River/Pine duo features 18 holes with mature trees and stunning views of the San Gabriel Mountains. The Mountain layout has 9 holes and is suitable for fast rounds. The course offers various rates and green fees, with 18 holes for public and $23 for senior members. The practice facility is well-lit and open until 10:00 p.m., providing a controlled environment for golf swing improvement. Reviews of the course include positive experiences, such as the Mountain nine, which was enjoyable but not the most exciting. Overall, Whittier Narrows Golf Course is a convenient and economical option for golfers.
